Episode 130 | HARD WORK vs THE LAW OF ATTRACTION

This episode is sponsored by Scare Scotland

Since you alone are responsible for your thoughts, only you can change them. Paramahansa Yogananda

Well here we are at the new years episode, but I’m not going to make this one a special necessarily. If you want a great special which talks all about Your Vest Year Yet by Jinny Ditzler, then I suggest that you go back to last years special and listen to that. Studies have shown over the years that people that set New Year's goals generally don't actually meet them. In fact, of the 41% of Americans who make New Year's resolutions, only 9% are successful in keeping them. In order to beat those odds last years New year’s show goes through a system which will help you to identify weaknesses and strengths, choose the goals and objectives that really mean something and effectively strategize to achieve them. Poor execution of your plans and strategies is the main reason that your goals fail, and Jinny Ditzler’s system will be a real boost in the arm to any of you who are wanting to achieve great things in the year ahead.

Today I want to discuss a topic that some of you may already be aware of. It’s often referred to as having a positive mental attitude which is no bad thing, but here I am referring more specifically to prosperity consciousness

Wikipedia describes it as a term and teaching often referred to in New Age and New Thought communities, and it is a term sometimes used by financial professionals. It describes the belief that by opening one's mind to the financial opportunities in the world, and by living a life and having a perspective that welcomes financial resources, one will bring financial wealth into one's life. Prosperity consciousness is based primarily on a belief in the Law of Attraction and its use for attracting more wealth.

That now possibly begs the question What Is the Law of Attraction?

The law of attraction is a philosophy suggesting that positive thoughts bring positive results into a person's life, while negative thoughts bring negative outcomes. It is based on the belief that thoughts are a form of energy and that positive energy attracts success in all areas of life, including health, finances, and relationships whereas negative energy will bring the opposite results. That’s not something I can disagree with.

Based on these lofty promises, it begs the further question: Is the law of attraction real? Well while the law of attraction has generated attention in recent years due to books like "The Secret," I am sorry to say that it lacks scientific evidence for its claims and is generally viewed as a pseudoscience.

With that said let me just scratch the surface of it:

As I said a minute ago, Advocates suggest there are three central universal principles that make up the law of attraction:

1. Like attracts like: This law suggests that similar things are attracted to one another. It means that people tend to attract people who are similar to them—but it also suggests that people's thoughts tend to attract similar results. Negative thinking is believed to attract negative experiences, while positive thinking is believed to produce desirable experiences. This is not necessarily my belief but it surely cannot be denied that positive people are more attractive than negative ones, and that negative people are more likely to be destructive to whatever it is you are working on. I’ve done enough episodes now on toxic personalities to prove this true.

2. Nature abhors a vacuum: This law of attraction suggests that removing negative things from your life can make space for more positive things to take their place. It is based on the notion that it is impossible to have a completely empty space in your mind and in your life. Since something will always fill this space, it is important to fill that space with positivity, proponents of this philosophy say. This is absolutely my way of thinking, and if you go back to my episode on Jim Rohn’s adage that you become the sum of the 5 people you spend the most time with you will know what I am saying.

3. The present is always perfect: This law focuses on the idea that there are always things you can do to improve the present moment. While it might always seem like the present is somehow flawed, this law proposes that, rather than feeling dread or unhappiness, you should focus your energy on finding ways to make the present moment the best that it can be. I’d say that’s intellectually correct but that it is not always easy or possible to do so. If you are on a sinking ship and they’ve run out of lifeboats. No amount of positive thinking is going to save you.

Now I’m going to be posting links in the show notes for all of this but let me quickly outline The 7 Laws (or mini laws that make up the overall law here) of Attraction.

#1 The Law of Manifestation

The Law of Manifestation states that our thoughts and feelings create our reality –and what we focus on is what we will manifest in our lives. In the Law of Attraction affirmations are a powerful way to keep your goals top of mind and help you focus on what you want. This is certainly something I would go along with.

#2 The Law of Magnetism

The Law of Magnetism states that everything that has happened in your life – the people, things, and opportunities that have come into your life, as well as the circumstances in which you have found yourself – is a result of the energy you put out into the world. In effect this means, that You attract what you are.

#3 The Law of Unwavering Desire

The Law of Unwavering Desire states that your desire to achieve or attract a certain thing must be strong and unyielding in order for you to manifest it in your life. When your desires are weak and without a rock-solid foundation, they won’t be able to attract what you want.

#4 The Law of Delicate Balance

When the different aspects of your life are in balance, you are able to experience true peace and joy. But in order to achieve balance, appreciation and gratitude are required.

#5 The Law of Harmony

The Law of Harmony describes the coordinated interplay of forces and elements that comprise the Universe. When you are in tune with it, everything seems easy, as if you are swimming with the current rather than against it.

#6 The Law of Right Action

The Law of Right Action states that your words and actions affect the world around you and determine the quality of your experiences in life. How you behave and treat others will determine how others treat you.

I think to always treat others as you would want to be treated yourself and treat every single person with the same amount of respect. It's not often you see it, but sometimes you meet someone who is not very nice to their peers. But when you do, it's a massive lesson in treating everybody with respect. Christine Bottomley

#7 The Law of Universal Influence

It’s easy to feel small and insignificant when staring up at the stars at night. But the truth is, every one of us is an integral part of the Universe. It’s important for you to be aware of your thoughts, feelings, and actions—as well as signs from the Universe— to demonstrate the impact of your actions and point you in the direction of your dreams.

By doing so, The Law of Attraction states that you will be able to effectively control your energy and increase the positive impact you have on the world around you.

And it’s at this point that I’m going to say if you wan to know more, I’ll post some links in the show notes. I know a lot of people that really believe in this stuff, and I think that it’s been built on many useful guiding principles within it, but it’s all a bit to airy fairy for me personally.

There is a lot of talk about the Law of Attraction and its benefits can be seen on a 2 specific levels.

  • The most positive benefit that I have derived from the Law of Attraction is the mental discipline that it teaches about holding EXCLUSIVELY positive thoughts. This is a powerful thing, that f harnessed will always help in achieving your wants and goals.

  • Secondly the Law of Attraction encourages the increasing of gratitude within oneself. This makes one a lot happier in general, and a more pleasant person to be around. So it has the added benefit of joy and enhancing social interaction.

The pitfalls of the Law of Attraction should be spoken of too. This is where believers in the secret may want to lynch me, for I am not a great believer in all this.

Inspect every piece of pseudoscience and you will find a security blanket. Isaac Asimov
  • This is pseudoscience – there are no studies that prove its worth at all.

  • Holding an exclusively positive perspective is unrealistic. You have to be balanced and face negativity to be able to act effectively to change it.

  • It’s not purpose driven. The Universe sets your life purpose. You pick the specific goal based on wants; not values. If the best way for me to achieve my goals is to live as if I’ve already achieved them, then there is no reason to make further plans to do so!

  • Skipping the process and focusing on the result is not a great way to achieve productivity.

  • You alone are completely responsible for any goal that was not successfully achieved, no matter how unrealistic the goal. This assumes that you not only control your thoughts and actions, but also those of everyone around you…and nature. The fact is, you don’t.

I absolutely believe that there are things to be learned from prosperity consciousness. I like the idea of the positive mindset, of affirmations, of picturing what you want and focusing your energy towards achieving it, and I know that this is just a quick dip into the topic, which perhaps oversimplifies it all, but I cannot get away from the feeling that, fundamentally, I believe that the law of attraction is nothing without hard work behind it. Simple wishing positive thoughts is only part of the puzzle, it is by no means the solution.

A positive mindset, not a doomsday mentality, supports being exceptional. Wayne Dyer

I’ll leave the topic there for now. The only call to action being to focus down on the positive mindset. If you want a little more, go back to last years NY special and get a Best Year Yet program built.

I’m very grateful to you for joining me again here today, I hope you’ve got something out of it. I’ve had this topic on my board for upwards of a year so I’m glad I’ve had a go at tackling it.
